Games for your chat

Free Twitch chat games: Word Chain & Letter Rain

Wortkette is a small collection of free Twitch chat games that run right in your browser. Your viewers play by typing words into chat – no bot to add, no account to create, nothing to download. Pick Word Chain for a cooperative streak or Letter Rain for a quick race against the clock.

Two word games to play with your Twitch chat

Both games follow the same idea. You open the game in its own browser window, enter your channel name and capture that window in your streaming software. From then on the game reads your chat and checks every message on the spot. Which one fits your stream depends on the mood: teamwork under a ticking clock, or a free-for-all where the fastest typer wins.

Wortkette (Word Chain)

Every word has to start with the last letter of the one before, and no word may be used twice. Your chat gets 30, 20 or 12 seconds per word depending on the pace you choose, and the timer shrinks a little after every correct answer. Everyone works together to keep the chain alive.

Letter Rain

One letter, one category: your chat collects as many matching words as possible in one minute. A word only counts for whoever types it first, and a live leaderboard with gold, silver and bronze shows who is ahead.

Learn about Letter Rain

Here is what a short Word Chain round in the Animals category can look like:

Letter Rain plays out differently. The screen might show "Animals with B", and within seconds chat fills up with bear, beaver, badger and bison – everybody racing at once instead of taking turns.

A free Twitch chat game with no bot and no login

You never have to connect a bot or hand out permissions for your channel. Instead, your browser joins your Twitch chat anonymously and in read-only mode, so there is no Twitch login and the game never posts anything in chat. If someone repeats a word or gets the starting letter wrong, the hint appears on screen inside the game rather than as spam in your chat.

The step-by-step OBS guide walks you through capturing the window in OBS, placing your facecam and compensating for stream delay.

How your viewers join in

Viewers don't need to install anything, learn commands or sign up anywhere. If they can type in chat, they can play.

  1. Start a round. Press Space, or let your mods type !wk start in chat.
  2. Type words. Capitalisation and accents don't matter, and filler like "lol" is simply ignored.
  3. Score points. Valid words are scored instantly, and every letter beyond five adds a bonus point.
  4. See the results. At the end the game shows the top player, any new record and a few words that would also have worked.

Offensive words are never accepted or displayed, and well-known bots like Nightbot or StreamElements are ignored automatically. If you only want deliberate answers to count, you can require a prefix such as !w.

Levels and achievements across every stream

Every point a viewer earns becomes 1 XP, and that XP follows them from stream to stream wherever Wortkette is running. Level 2 takes 50 XP, level 10 takes 2,250 XP and level 50 takes 61,250 XP, with new titles unlocking along the way.

On top of that there are 49 achievements in eight groups – for example answering in under two seconds, or landing a five-hit combo in Letter Rain. Level-ups and new achievements pop up on screen after each round, and the top 25 players appear on the achievements page. Streamers can switch sharing off, and players can opt out of having their profile shown.

Separately, each channel keeps its own local leaderboard in your browser. You can view it for the current week, which resets every Monday, or for all time, and export it as a JSON file.

Eight categories with English word lists

Switch the game to English and every category uses its own English word list. The seven themed categories hold more than 64,700 words between them, and Everything accepts roughly 190,000 entries based on the public-domain ENABLE word list.

Words the game doesn't recognise get reported, so the lists keep growing over time. Streaming in German? Switch the game to DE, or read the German overview.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Both games are free to use, with no account and no login. Open the site in your browser and you can start a round straight away.

Do I need to add a bot to my channel?

No. The game reads your chat anonymously and in read-only mode, and it never writes anything in chat. There is nothing to authorise.

Do I have to be an Affiliate or Partner?

No. It works with any Twitch channel – just enter your channel name.

What about trolls?

Offensive words are never accepted or shown. Your mods can remove the last word with !veto, which also takes back the points for it, draw a new starting letter with !wk skip or end the round with !wk stop. You can also ignore specific accounts, require a word prefix, or stop anyone from answering twice in a row in Word Chain.

Can I play without Twitch?

Yes. Offline mode lets you invite friends with a link or QR code; they join on their phones while the main board runs on your laptop or TV. A room holds up to 200 players and closes automatically six hours after the last person joins. Levels and achievements aren't counted offline.

Who made Wortkette?

Wortkette is made by callmekyrus, a German-speaking Twitch streamer (profile page in German). Found a bug or have a word suggestion? Come by the Discord.
