How to Add Wortkette to OBS
Want to add a Twitch chat game to OBS without setting up a bot? Open Wortkette in its own browser window, capture that window in OBS and drop your facecam on the left side of the picture. The same setup works for Wortkette (Word Chain) and for Letter Rain.
Free · no bot · no login
Setting up the game in OBS
Everything runs in your browser – there's nothing to download or install. The page connects to your Twitch chat anonymously and read-only, so you never log in with Twitch and the game never posts anything in your chat. Your viewers don't need anything either: they simply type their words into chat as usual.
- Open the game in a browser window. Load wortkette.com in a separate browser window so OBS can grab exactly that window. Switch the language to English if you like, enter your Twitch channel under "Play", pick a game and a category, then hit "Start game". Press F for fullscreen. The control menu slides in when you move your mouse into the corner and tucks itself away again afterwards.
- Capture it in OBS. In OBS, choose "Add source → Window Capture" and select the browser window running Wortkette. The playing field adapts to the size of the window, so fullscreen gives you the cleanest picture. If any borders are left over, crop them in OBS by holding Alt while you drag the edges of the source.
- Place your facecam. In OBS, just layer your camera on top of the window capture, ideally on the left: that side of the playing field stays free during a round. Before and after a round, the game shows the "Today" and "This round" lists there. You don't need a separate in-game setting.
Tip: Want a dry run before going live? "Play offline" lets you start the game on your own in test mode and type the words yourself, so you can check your OBS layout without anyone watching. Levels and achievements aren't counted in this mode.
Chat commands for mods
You and your moderators can run the game straight from chat. These commands only respond to moderators and the broadcaster, so regular viewers can't end a round or delete someone else's word. !wortkette works as a longer alias for !wk.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
!wk start | New round |
!wk animals | New round with a category (animals, countries, cities, food, plants, jobs, rivers, everything) |
!veto or !wk veto | Remove the last word |
!wk skip | New starting letter |
!wk stop | End the round |
The veto is your safety net: if a word slips through that shouldn't count, a mod removes it and the points come off the player's score. In Word Chain the chain then picks up from the previous letter and the timer restarts. In Letter Rain, !wk skip starts a new round with a fresh letter when the current one has your chat stumped.
Keyboard shortcuts
If you're at the keyboard yourself, these hotkeys are quicker than any menu. They work while the game's browser window is focused.
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Space | New round |
| S | New letter |
| V | Remove word |
| E | Open settings |
| A | Auto mode on/off |
| F | Fullscreen |
| Esc | Close settings or menu |
Settings worth checking before you go live
Press E in the game or use the control menu to open the settings. Every change is saved instantly. These are the ones that matter most on stream:
- Compensate stream delay: Your chat sees the picture a few seconds after you do. The default is 3 seconds, adjustable from 0 to 20. The in-game hint suggests 2–4 seconds for Twitch with "Low latency" and 6–10 otherwise. The timer is then shifted so it hits zero for your chat exactly when the round ends.
- Auto mode: Off by default. Switch it on and the next round starts by itself after a break of 3 to 300 seconds. Without it, you move on with the button, Space or
!wk start. - Prefix for words: Set something like
!wand only messages starting with it are counted. Leave it empty and every message is checked – common chat filler such as "lol" is skipped anyway. - Ignore these accounts: Well-known bots like Nightbot, StreamElements, Streamlabs, Moobot and Fossabot are already on the list. Add your own bots separated by commas.
- Show hints: Displays a short notice on the playing field when a word is unknown, already used or starts with the wrong letter. These hints appear in the game overlay, never in chat.
- Look & sound: Pick an accent colour from six swatches, choose whether the ranking between rounds shows "This week" or "All time", move the control menu to another corner and set sound effects and volume. Every October a Halloween theme switches on automatically; you can also force it on or off.
The game rules live on the same screen – speed, linking letter, "Nobody may answer twice in a row" and the round length for Letter Rain. For what each option changes, see the pages on Word Chain and Letter Rain.
Troubleshooting
The capture in OBS is just black
Open the properties of your Window Capture source and change the capture method to "Windows 10 (1903 and later)". The playing field should then appear.
There are dark borders around the game
The playing field follows the shape of your browser window. Go fullscreen with F, then trim whatever is left by Alt-dragging the edges of the source in OBS.
Answers arrive too late or the timer feels unfair
Your "Compensate stream delay" value doesn't match your actual latency. As a starting point, the game suggests 2–4 seconds for Twitch with "Low latency" and 6–10 otherwise. Raise it step by step until answers from chat land in time.
Is my chat actually connected?
Once the connection is up, the game shows "Chat connected". If it stays on "Connecting …" or says "Not found", double-check the spelling of your channel name. Connected but no words coming through? Make sure you haven't set a word prefix your viewers aren't using.
Skip the setup screen with a channel link
Add ?channel=yourchannel to the address and the game launches straight into your channel. After the first start the parameter already sits in the address bar, so just bookmark the page. For Letter Rain you'll also see &game=regen at the end.
Leaderboard data and export
Your settings, records and the local leaderboard are stored in your browser on your PC. The leaderboard is kept per channel, either for the current week (it resets every Monday) or for all time – which is why it pays to always stream from the same browser.
Moving to another computer or browser? Open the leaderboard, click "Export" to download a JSON file, then use "Import" on the new machine. Viewer levels and achievements are a different story: the server tracks them across all streams, and you can turn sharing off under "Chat" in the settings. The overview of our Twitch chat games explains how levels work, and the privacy policy has the details.
Setup FAQ
Do I need a bot or a Twitch login?
No. Your browser reads chat anonymously. There's no account to create, and the game never writes to your chat.
Can regular viewers use the commands?
No. !wk and !veto only react to moderators and the broadcaster. Viewers just type their words.
Does this guide also cover Letter Rain?
Yes. The browser window, window capture, facecam placement, commands and hotkeys are identical for both games – you simply pick the game before you start.
Is there an English word list?
Yes. Switch the game to English and it uses its own English lists for Animals, Countries, Cities, Food, Plants, Jobs, Rivers and Everything.
Where do I report a bug or a missing word?
Drop by the Discord. Unknown words typed in chat are also reported automatically so the lists keep growing. Got an idea for a new game? Send it through the ideas form.
